Description
Madder root (Rubia tinctorum) is very versatile plant best known for a variety of shades of red from fiery and blood red to more subtle orange reds.
The color depends on many factors including the age, type of soil they are grown in, and the mineral content of the water as well as it’s temperature.
For best results use hard water, and for a good red color it’s necessary to add chalk made from calcium carbonate (the more common magnesium carbonate is not the correct type for this purpose).
Our madder root is cultivated in Brazil and availability is limited to certain times of year when it can be harvested sustainably.
